Our story
How Purple came to be
My 4-year-old wanted his own computer. He has his own rolling pin, his own snow shovel. Why not a computer?
We'd been doing "computer code" together on my laptop for a while: typing words to see emojis, playing with colors and sounds. He loved it. So I took an old laptop and turned it into a space for him. Type "trex" x 3 and see ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฆ. Press any key and hear a sound. I also added text-to-speech to read back what he typed, which he mostly used to type nonsense words...but whatever!
This felt different than screen time: no episodes and nothing addictive, just exploring and creating. So we built it out more, and he and his sister have been my beta testers!
